Mangaluru, Jul 21: Coastal region of Karnataka and Kasargod district in the state of Kerala received good rains on Saturday, July 20.
The city of Mangaluru received moderate rains in the evening and night of Saturday. Udupi received heavy rains in the morning and moderate rains in the evening. Sullia, Puttur, Uppinangady, Mulky, Kinnigoli, Beltangady, Dharmasthala, Suratkal, Guruvayanakere, Ullal, B C Road, Vittal, Kanyana and Kasargod received good rains.
The meteorological department had predicted that there will be heavy rains from July 20 to 22 in the coastal districts. Due to this, holiday was declared for schools and colleges of both the districts by the district administration.
Around 50 labourers had a providential escape as they left minutes before the compound wall of an apartment complex collapsed near Akashavani residential building at Urwa Store in the city. The compound wall that collapsed belongs to the new multi-storey building that is under construction. Due to the collapse of the wall, the residential building Akashavani is in danger now.
Udupi, Manipal, Kota, Kaup, Brahmavar, Kollur, Jadkal, Vandse, Mundkoor, Belman, Karkala and Thekkate areas also received heavy rains. Varahi River is filled to the brim. The artificial flood was formed at Katapadi Kallapu. The residents of a house were shifted to a safer place. Belapu-Moolurubailu is submerged in water. One house at Haleangady is covered with water with the household items got damaged. Inmates of the house were shifted to a safer place.
Nalleguthu vented dam at Kadandale is submerged and this has caused traffic block.
Artificial flooding was also noticed in areas of Thokkottu Junction, Kallapu and Kumpala Bypass on NH 66. Motorists are having a tough time due to the water logging.
Red alert has been declared in the district of Kasargod for July 21 also. There is a possibility of more than 204 mm of rain in the next 24 hours. Public is asked to be cautious and alert by the district administration on the wake of heavy rains accompanied by wind.
Madhoor Patla area was completely submerged in water and 33 families have been shifted to other places. 13 people, living near the Arayi Bridge of Kanhangad have been shifted to a safer area.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea till 11.30 pm of July 21 as there are chances of waves up to a height of 3.5 to 4.3 meters forming in the sea. In addition, west side wind at a speed of 40 to 50 km will also blow during this period.
