Mangaluru, Jul 20: City police commissioner Sandeep Patil, passed on instructions to city bus owners to guide their staff to behave well with passengers and also cooperate in the matter of returning change to them. He was speaking in response to complaints received during the weekly phone-in programme held at his office on Friday, July 19.

Some callers complained that the conductors of private city buses do not pay back change. There were also complaints about conductors refusing to extend concessional fare to students if they do not bring exact change, and collecting full bus fare from them.

A citizen pointed out that auto rickshaw drivers operating at Deralakatte do not follow uniform rates. He also urged for publishing a list of fares. The police commissioner promised to discuss the issue with transport officials and publish list of fares. When another caller said water supply had not been provided at government sites allotted at Jokatte, the commissioner said that the matter would be brought to the notice of the deputy commissioner of the district.

While a citizen demanded for construction of bus shelter at the bus stand near Bejai museum, another said that calls made to police control room do not get immediate response. There was also demand for construction of speed breakers on Bejai circle - KSRTC bus stand road, to which assistant commissioner of police, Manjunath Shetty, clarified that speed breakers have been sanctioned for this stretch of the road. The commissioner asked the concerned to arrange for speed breakers at the earliest.

On the issue of speeding two-wheelers in front of A J Hospital, the police commissioner said that traffic police would act against them. About potholes near the tollgate at Bantwal, Patil said that the matter would be brought to the notice of national highways authority. Several complaints like mosquito and street dog menace pertained to city corporation and hence the commissioner said they would be referred to the corporation.

Rajavarma Ballal, president of Kanara Bus Owners Association, deputy commissioners of police, Hanumantharaya and Laxmi Ganesh, assistant commissioners of police, Manjunath Shetty and Vinay Gaonkar, traffic inspectors, Amanulla, Mohan Kottary, and Guridath Kamath were present.

It is good to see that THE PHONE-IN program has taken a good shape. Yes.... indeed the offenders need to be taken to task sand this is what The Police Department is striving at.

The other irregularities are the two wheelers and three wheelers overtaking from the left side of moving vehicles and buses stopping at non-designated bus halts.

27no buses don't charge minimal amt of 8Rs instead charge 9Rs for a short distance if a 10Rs note is given. If we give a change of 8Rs then he gives a ticket of 8Rs/- else on an average 1Rs per passenger making an additional more than 2-3K/day income per day! Public keep mum without asking the change hence a good profit for the bus more over it's the shortest route of city bus in Mangalore without competition from other route bus like a route no 5 or 15 in Kankanady route.y

These Auto Rickshaw drivers and Bus Conductors will behave so,
because in Mangalore and Udupi, laws are not implemented by
the Police, the Traffic Police, and the Judiciary. They can make
them obedient only by punishing them severely. There must be
some form of regulation to grant them a licence to operate.

There are no Road Signs anywhere in the city or outside of the city
on the Highway from Mangalore to Udupi to Kundapur. The bus
drivers speed over 80km and change lanes at will honking like crazy
all the while. Where are the so called Police or Traffic Police to
keep a check on this. The Highway Authority of India must be made
to put up large Road Signs every where on the Highway - even those S-Turn
barriers that are put up near every town on the highway, do not
have hazard warning lamps on them during the night. They are the
    most hazardous of all!
High fees and High penalties are only a waste of time for safety of
people in general. Provisions are what is the need of the day!

The police are not bothered to lock cars parked on footpath specially in the Light House Hill area. They all of a sudden lock cars at Mother Teresa road near the Milagres church. If the police lock cars they should do it on a daily basis not when they opt to do it. Why cannot the police have uniform rules in Mangalore? In Valencia on the Fr. Mullers road we can see more than a dozen private ambulances and eatries parked on parking lots obstructing public to use the parking space. The police should look into it and not allow ambulances to park there. The ambulancesvare parked there as if it is their private property.

Many refuse to accept 10 rupees coin. What should we do at this time? Government should either withdraw or give repeatedly public notice to accept these coins.

Now a days we have to travel in city bus without tickets. Just pay and travel.
Some auto drivers are charging day time only 1 1/2 of the meter during early mornings, even day time. Some are charging without meters..
