Mangaluru, Jul 20: The city police, on Friday July 19, detected a gang indulging in sale of MDMA - methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (ecstasy) drug in the beaches of the city, and made three arrests. They also recovered things worth Rs 1, 10,200 from the gang members including 16 grams of MDMA worth Rs 80,000.
The identities of the arrested men have been given as Abubakkar Misbah (24), resident of Ullal Volapete, Shabbir Ahmed alias Shabbir (27) from Someshwara Permannur, and Shihab Abdul Razak (27) from Alekala, Ullal.
The special crime intelligence bureau team members of the police were on special duty rounds within the limits of Panambur police station at around 9 am on Friday when the raid was conducted based on reliable information. The police said that the gang members named above located in the city used to buy MDMA drug from Mumbai, which was then supplied to customers here, mostly targetting student community. They also sold drugs to others, they explained.
The trio used to sell drugs from morning to night at Panambur, Ullal, and other beaches. The police cordoned off the gang members and took them into custody when they were standing with a scooter on the road leading from Bykampady to Koorikatta on Friday. They were handed over to Panambur police thereafter along with the assets seized.
16.55 grams of MDMA, a Jupiter scooter valued at Rs 25,000, four cell phones worth Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,200 in cash were recovered from the accused.
The raid was conducted by Panambur police inspector, Azmat Ali, assistant sub-inspector of the special crime intelligence bureau of the city (north) division, Mohammed, and other staff along with city crime branch police sub-inspector, Kabbalraj and assistant sub-inspectors, Mohan Shettiyar and Harish, led by assistant commissioner of police, Srinvias R Gowda, under the guidance of deputy commissioners of police, Hanumantharaya and Laxmi Ganesh under the directions of the city police commissioner, Sandeep Patil.
