Mangaluru, Jul 19: Monsoon has gained in intensity in coastal Karnataka and coastal districts have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Thursday morning. The meteorological department has predicted the rains to continue for five days.

The department has sounded orange alert in the coast. As wind with a velocity of 40 to 50 knots per hour is expected to sweep the coastline, tourists and fishermen alike have been warned against venturing into the sea, said Prof S S M Gavaskar, scientist of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell.

Dharwad, Bailahongala taluk of Belagavi district and Karike in Kodagu district got heavy rainfall since Wednesday night, resulting in fallen trees, blocked traffic, and artificial floods in low-lying areas. Several houses crashed to the ground, and some auto rickshaws carrying school children got stranded in standing water, and a few school bags were washed away.

Although the department had predicted heavy rainfall all over Kodagu district and issued orange alert, the rainfall was limited to only one part of the district. Almost all places in Dakshina Kannada district reported heavy downpour.
