Udupi: Vishwasada Mane to reunite six people with families

Udupi, Jul 16: Six people, who were suffering from mental illness and were found wandering in Udupi, will now be reunited with their families. Thanks to the care provided at the rehabilitation centre, Vishwasada Mane, the six people have recovered and are now aware of their identities.

Addressing a press meet on Monday, July 15, Vishwasada Mane president Sunil D’Souza said that the six people were picked up from various streets in Udupi at different times. They were not aware of their identities then.

On November 11, 2016, a man was picked up near Manipal DC’s office. He was mentally ill and maintained poor hygiene. He also refused to communicate with anyone. The person was rehabilitated at Vishwasada Mane and was given medical treatment. Recently, the person revealed that his name is Vittal and he hails from Gadag, Sunil D’Souza said.

On May 11, 2016, a 50-year-old man was found roaming on the Kollur highway. He was unable to recollect his name or address. After treatment and care at the rehabilitation centre, the person said his name is Narnbayya and he hails from Telangana.

On March 23, 2017, a woman in an inebriated state was found talking loudly to herself. She was lying on the side of the Shankarapura road. The lady was taken to the rehab and given treatment. This woman later identified herself as Bhojamma and she gave the details of her family in Telangana. Sadly, no one came forward to take her, D’Souza said.

A 40-year-old man was brought to Vishwasada Mane by Stephen D’Costa on May 4, 2016. The person was not dressed properly and was found near Kundapur Shastri circle. After treatment, the person said he hails from Bengaluru and his name is Suresh.

On February 8, 2019, a 30 year lady suffering from mental illness was scolding people loudly in Shankarapura bus stand. The Shirva police brought the woman to Vishwasada Mane. The volunteers took care of her. She has now recovered completely and said her name is Sujatha and she hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Another woman who was found near Udupi Krishna Math was brought to the rehab on December 12, 2015. The woman has recovered and does all the work. She hails from Tumakuru.

D’Souza said that as all the people have recovered, they will be reunited with their families. The staff of Vishwasada Mane will drop the six people to their houses.

David Lewis Tallur, Edward Menezes, Pastor Xavier Mathew Mascarenhas were present.
