Udupi, May 29: A unique marriage function was conducted at Alevoor near Malpe here, on Thursday May 28. Instead of human beings, a sacred fig tree and a neem tree donned the roles of the bridegroom and the bride.
The marriage reminded one of the marriage of frogs conducted here last year, in the hope that the ritual would cause the rainy season to usher in. A local citizen, who strongly believed that conducting this unique marriage would prove to be auspicious for his family, had arranged for this marriage.
Deviprasanna Upadhyaya from Alevoor village officiated the religious rituals. Harish Shetty, a local citizen, who believed that conducting the marriage results in peace in the family and augurs well for its members, performed the function.
The customary 'Upanayanam' or thread ceremony of the sacred fig tree was performed earlier to the marriage. Later, the neem tree, decorated like a bride, was led to the venue in a procession, to the accompaniment of musical instruments. Just like any other Hindu marriage, the custom of the relatives of the two sides meeting each other, duly holding auspicious things in their hands, was followed. Mouth, nose, eyes etc., were drawn on the stem of the tree to look like a human being. Before solemnizing the marriage, some oblations were performed, as suggested by Upadhyaya.
Rituals connected with this marriage had begun a day before, on Wednesday evening. Time alone can tell whether this marriage will bring the results expected of it.
