Mangaluru: School children vehicle drivers begin indefinite strike

Mangaluru, Jul 11: School Children Transport Vehicle Drivers' Association has begun indefinite strike from Thursday, June 11 accusing the police of constant harassment in the name of protection and law. 

The association will hold a huge protest meeting in front of the DC office on Friday, July 12. State High Court has sent out an order to the police to keep vigil on the limit of number of children that are carried in the private vehicles that transport children to school. The drivers of these vehicles have alleged that the police are harassing them continuously since a month through slapping of cases and huge fines citing the implementation of the order of High court.

Slapping case even if there are children within the limit prescribed, suspension of licence, slapping one over the other cases on the driver, using abusive language etc are the atrocities that are carried out by the police on the drivers, said the association. 

DCP - Crime and ACP Traffic held meeting with concerned. As per law such vehicles cannot carry excess school children. Also, High Court of Karnataka has given specific direction that cases should be booked against such vehicles carrying excess children, and is monitoring the action taken. 

Above points have been brought to the notice of the association that they have to follow the law and direction of High Court, and to call off the strike so that school children are not put to inconvenience and rather the association follow the rules and help in children safety.

    In the absence of an efficient public transport system with only heavily overcrowded and easily driven pvt buses people have to heavily depend on these pvt transporters who are taking full advantage of the situation by transporting multiple children like livestock and putting their life to risk!!

    What the police are doing is right following the HC decision after a series of gory accidents involving innocent children!

    Also, one might have noticed pvt Toofan vehicles carrying overloads of pilgrim passengers passing through the city, which also have led to numerous accidents killing entire families and maiming many!!

    if the school van increase thier fess by 100 rupees, you will all protest.

    why is this strike for? As cited here police is only trying to Enforce The High court order and that's why we have the police for the enforcement of the law. Do these vehicle owners mean that they arent ready to abide by the law? Heights of stupidity. Private Buses , Auto, Taxi, School Buses (Specially one's plying without proper safety methods) should be dealt strictly by the police and the law.

    Here the complaint is that the police is slapping them with fine and cases, now come on...If you guys play with lives of the children, should the police garland and felicitate you? Police is doing the right thing and they must continue with what they are doing. We have full faith in our Police Force.

    School children vehicle drivers should understand that when it comes to safety of children , we cannot compromise.

    If there is any ill treatment by police please complain to higher officials.

    Strike will not help.

    I Send my children by these transport and i do not have any problem. Children can at least sit in these vehicles even if though there is some congestion. Their fees have not increased since last two years, which is a good sign. How will they earn their living if they have so may restriction put on them. There are a few rash drivers, only they should be fined.

    I see a omni car daily fully loaded with children driving rashly in city limits that too during peak hours. One more thing I noticed is that the children bags are kept on the top as though it is some luggage.. Police department is doing their duty. Safety first, protest next

    Yes these school children drivers are so erratic and rash driving.
    We see this one a daily basis and I have also noticed that the children safety is their least concern. Not all vehicles are following maximum number of children rule. These vehicles are always in a hurry to finish school trips to continue their other trips.
    So I believe that, police should take proper action. God forbid something happens, police will be the first Target for all of it though it's not Police mistake.
    Do, let them follow rules n abide by laws.

    These drivers need this treatment. They have no mercy towards children, just want to mint money . I see everyday jam packed vans with children with no rules being followed by them . Children are special and need special treatment.

    I agree partially. Overstuffed school van/ rickshaw is accident disaster waiting to happen.. But what about local buses which transport passengers like sheep to slaughter?
    In my younger days, atleast local buses used to have 50 + 10 + 2 painted behind drivers cabin, which meant 50 passengers seating, 10 standing passengers, and 2 bus personnel. So standing ppl may not have crossed more than 25 ppl due to signboard....Not anymore. That sign has disappeared and on contrary they stuff more people inside bus like aloo bonda.

    Its 35 10 2...thats the limit...still they carry 100 in one bus...why? The bus doesn't pay tax for these extra passengers...or govt should make a rule, for standing in bus, only half charge needs to be collected... those who stand, has to pay equal to those who are seated, why? Let there be half charge for all standing.....

    NOW EVERY PARENTS HAVE 1-2 CHILDREN.DRIVERS HAVE NO LOSE ABOUT CHILDREN IF THEY LOST LIFE IN ANY TRAGEDY.ONLY PARENTS LOST THEIRS LIFE.SOME YEARS BACK IN TRACY OF KUNDAPURA HAPPENED SAME.IF DRIVERS CAN'T MANAGE BY LIMITED CHILDREN,THEY MAY SEE OTHER WAY.ALSO PARENTS SHOULD BEAR COST IF DRIVERS FIXED SUFFICIENT FEES FOR TRANSPORTING OF THEIRS CHILDREN.IF CAN'T MANAGE SEND TO THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOL .THERE ARE ALL FREE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN.BUT DON'T SUPPORT THE DRIVERS TO BREAK THE RULES.BECOUSE IT IS PARENTS LIFE QUASTION
