Mangaluru, Jul 8: District Congress committee staged a protest at DC office in the city on Monday, July 8 against the gang rape on a college student that took place at Puttur.
Addressing the protestors, former MLA Shakuntala Shetty said, "Our country should follow Saudi Arabia model by hanging the culprits, who rape women. Only then, we will be able to control the rape on women and children.” She also demanded action against the culprits of Puttur gang rape.
“20 years ago, a girl named Soumya Bhat was killed by a man. BJP had protested at Puttur condemning the murder. Shobha Karandhlaje had blamed District-in-charge minister U T Khader for the Derlakatte incident where a boy stabbed a girl. Now when a girl is gang raped at Puttur, why she is silent on this issue? BJP are ruling in the central government, we should enforce the law of Saudi Arabia in India where a rape culprit is hanged publicly to give justice to the victims,” added Shakuntala.
The former MLA also said, "We are lucky that there was no minority community member in the group of the accused or else BJP would have taken it as a weapon to spoil peace and harmony of the district.”
President of District Congress committee Harish Kumar, former minister Ramanath Rai, district youth congress president Mithun Rai and others were present.
