About GI
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.
Udupi Saree obtained GI tag in 2016 for its speciality which indicates only weavers from south Canara and Udupi regions can weave these sarees.
The pallu portion of the saree is dyed in dark shade using tie and dye techniques before weaving. First entire warp of the saree is dyed in one colour and for pallu another colour dye is applied.
Starch is applied to the portion of the warp yarn during the time of weaving. This process is known as loom sizings.
Malabar loom / frame loom is used for weaving.
Some use cut border technique to weave the border in a darker colour.
Basel mission introduced Malabar loom/ frame loom in 1844.
