Bantwal, Jul 6: Members of the Congress party held protests in front of Raktheshwari temple, B C Road, under the leadership of former minister B Ramanath Rai urging for severe punishment for culprits of recent gang rape on college student in Puttur.
B Ramanath Rai addressing the protesters said that the rape of the girl by her own class mates is condemnable. “The organizations which are protesting in the name of religion every time when there are atrocities on women remaining silent when there is rape of girl belonging to scheduled caste has given rise to several suspicions. The police are likely to get pressure to protect the suspects. But they should not relent. An elected representative pressing police on certain cases has come to our notice. He is devastated when his picture with the suspect went viral.
“None has experienced as much propaganda as Ramanath Rai. The assault by district panchayat president on doctor while on duty is also condemnable,” he said. He requested advocates not to argue on behalf of the rape suspects.
District panchayat member M S Mohammed said that ABVP saying that the suspects are not their activists soon after gang rape was exposed is far from truth. “Atrocities against women have occurred when BJP was in power. Such incidents are recurring now,” he said. Chandraprakash Shetty urged that the suspects should be severely punished.
Block Congress president Baby Kunder, Sudeep Kumar Shetty, zilla panchayat member Padmashekar Jain, Rajashekar Nayak, Aida Suresh, Jayanti Poojary, Mallika Shetty, Lukman, Mohammed Nandarabettu, Sanjiv Poojary, Siddik Guddeyangadi, Prashanth Kulal, Lolaksha Shetty, Venkappa Poojary, Parameshwar, Mohammed Shafi, Jacinta D’Souza, Gayatri Safalya, Naseema Begum, Abbas Ali and others were present.
