'Bahikhaata' budget angers middle class on social media

New Delhi, Jul 5 (IANS): The moment after the "bahikhaata" Union Budget was presented on Friday, people took to social media platforms that erupted with angry and perplexed reactions.

"Your folder is sanskaari, symbolising 'departure from slavery of western thought', but your aspirations are 3 trillion 'US DOLLARS' economy, huh hypocrite!" tweeted a user.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the government aims to increase the present $2.7 trillion economy to $5 trillion by 2025.

"Instead of making US dollar a bench mark of aspirational currency, why not work on making Indian Rupee stronger?" another user posted.

Another social media user shared the lines from an old song: "Achcha sila diya tune mere pyar ka".

The middle class literally wailed when the petrol prices shot up by Rs 2.50 per litre, diesel prices hiked up by Rs 2.30 per litre just hours after the union budget was presented.

"This has been one of the poorest budgets for common honest tax payer and middle class. You are bound to lose many supporters," a user wrote in reply to former finance minister Arun Jaitley's tweet on the budget.

"Petrol prices, diesel prices higher. What are the benefits for honest tax payers? What is the tax benefit, pension benefit, gratuity amount holding by corporate companies?? You really care for honest people (Salaried)?" another person tweeted.

The budget also announced that for I-T returns, PAN and Aadhaar cards would be made interchangeable to help tax payers file their returns.

"So 'PAN and Aadhaar will become interchangeable' is somehow a tax benefit to middle-class Indians? So, you first introduce a problem, and then increase the problem, make it more complicated, and then reduce it again (but still keep it confusing) - that somehow becomes a benefit?" a user questioned the decision.

"PAN and Aadhaar interchangeable will not help middle class," another user tweeted.

People also criticised that the issue of unemployment was not addressed seriously.

"Hopeless budget 2019... no help or news for unemployment," a tweet said.

The millennials, however, had some fun with the budget.

"So, the budget has been declared, still there is no announcement on subsidy for annual subscription of Netflix, Prime and Hotstar. Is this the India we want to live in?" posted a Twitter user.

The funny memes also kept circulating.

Depicting the "before budget" and "after budget" feelings, a meme showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi first sitting on a rock, and then lying down flat on the rock.

The images and videos of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi looking blank and later dozing off went viral.

This is probably the most lackluster budget in recent times. Nirmala spent more time highlighting about open defecation, toilets, cleaning, sanitation than talk about how to improve the economy, boost development and create more jobs. This is not what the people were wanting to hear. It is very clear that she is totally clueless about what is going on. Without doubt, Piyush Goyal or Suresh Prabhu would have made better Finance Ministers. I am so disappointed that the finance, the backbone of the country, has been entrusted to Nirmala.

Every Budget has similar responses... Pro ruling people hailing and anti rulers cursing is a common thing and fate of Democracy. No chance to avoid.

Of course it may affect and there are events in mid way to reduce taxes as opposition also need a chance to show their muscle power.

Those who are talking about burden should sit once near the side of any National Highway to checkout Cars and SUVs that carry only one single passenger. First we need to stop this. What is the way ? Count the no of Enfield Bullets of High School students. Is it really necessary ? Till this attitude change a hike in price is justified. That is what Madam Nirmala did and hope she manage her portfolio and succeed in her vision.

    Conclusion:
    Government treasury is empty
People’s pocket will be torn bit by bit
Basic necessities like gasoline electricity and others where our revenue will increase
The so called budget had lots to speak benefiting the common man isn’t it?

But didn’t find any to decrease the expenses through MP MLA
Health sector-Foreign trip for their surgeries wherein poor have to suffer in Government hospitals
Limiting leaving headquarters- Review meeting through video conference
Traveling only for the welfare of the people rather his own benefits
Decreasing salaries of these gentlemen for growth of the economy
    No pension for the same
Make them accountable for their doings
Progress report of their day to day activities.
Deduction of salary -non performing lawmakers
    Bla bla bla

The achievement of this budget is changing the Briefcase into a Bahikhaata. Nothing more. Had they changed the lives of unemployed with jobs; or given a boost to the sagging economy especially the industrial sector; given some support to the poor farmers this cosmetic change from briefcase into bahikhaata would have been meaningful. Empty vessels making more noise.

I am a horrifically disappointed taxpayer who feels robbed. What do I get for paying tax is the opportunity to still borrow from here and there end of the day. I just went to fill diesel just to see that i had to shell out 2.30 rupees more. For all the taxes I pay, i only get to see evry other govt coming and appeasing their vote bank. Farmer loans waived left right center. Toll gates ooened every nook and corner. Cost of living rising every other day. I curse myself for being born a salaried middle class. Because my borrowings will never end. In the name of helping the country prosper, i fall deeper into debt every other day. I end up looking for a second source of income afyer working for 12 hours a day. I become an NPA and my Cybil scoring goes for a toss, because i cannot repay my loans. My birth itself is a curse. I am born to work like a donkey to make others prosper.

Not regretting yet, there are more gift packs to come. The voters only agenda was a Hindutva based administration. Budget has nothing hindutva about it. It is pure practical transaction, which our poor brethern forgot. They thought the rhetoric will see them through. I for one am sure, there is more to come...
