Panaji, Jun 23: Joao Pedro Duarte Oliveira Sousa, a Brazilian national, wanted by the Interpol for his involvement in narcotics case was detained by the Foreigner Regional Registration Offices (FRRO) on Friday in Goa.
Sousa against whom there is an Interpol red corner notice arrived in Goa in November 2018 and was residing in Canacona. As per a TOI report, senior FRRO officer told the publication that Sousa arrived on a tourist visa and his visa expired in January. Interpol issued the red corner notice in December when he was still in the state.
The officer from FRRO said that Sousa continued to stay in Goa as he missed his flight to Srilanka. Sousa applied for an exit permit in FRRO Mumbai and the officials in the Mumbai office informed their counterparts in Goa about the red corner notice against Sousa. When the Goa police launched a search operation to detain Sousa, they learnt he was out of station. The FRRO officer then called Sousa on his phone and asked him to appear in their office for clarification on his application for the exit permit. When Sousa arrived at the FRRO office he was detained by the officials and they informed the Brazilian embassy about the developments.
