Mangaluru: Doctors from twin-districts show solidarity, support IMA strike call

Mangaluru, Jun 17: Condemning assault of colleagues at Kolkata, doctors have been on a day-long strike all over India. Outpatient departments would remain closed from 6 am on Monday to 6 am on Tuesday.

The doctors of the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have extended support to the strike call. Private hospitals and doctors have been extending support to the strike call. All services except emergency are not available.

In Dakshina Kannada, doctors practising privately have closed their clinics for a day to support the strike call.

The striking doctors have now come together to hold a meeting at the Indian Medical Association auditorium, Attavar.

District Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen Hospital at Mangaluru, have been witnessing unprecedented rush of patients as private hospitals have not been providing outpatient services.

Even services at KMC Hospital Manipal would stand suspended for a day.

The government hospitals have been rendering services to the patients normally. There has been abnormal rush in government hospitals as private hospitals are not functional.

    While condemning the attacks on docs, majority of even botched up cases escape legal action due to weak application of negligency laws unlike in advanced couriers where medical negligence is dealt with strictly and the affected person awarded huge compensation and even the doc losing his licence!

    Recently, I read about a case about a sr oncologist in a Mumbai hospital killing a patient due to gross negligence; this case was pursued closely by the victims family with MCI and other regulators with absolutely no action! This doc then escaped to UK as he was a certified surgeon there, but the patient's family followed him and pursued the case vigorously with the medical council there! After prolonged arguments, the council found this doc at total fault and even stripped him of his foreign degree permanently!!
    But here the patients are always on the receiving side with no recourse to resolution of genuine cases and left to their own fate because of lax application of rules and money power!

    DePuy a subsidiary of a famous pharma co faced a class action suit in the USA from thousands of patients who were given heavy compensation implanted with their hip replacement kits, but the patients affected in India only got the expenditure for a new hip replacement but absolutely no compensation!!
    Unless the service providers are not afraid of such tough legal actions, patients will have no recourse to "injustice", but be at the mercy of docs!!

    I condemn this strike of doctors to support their collegues in Bengal .Dont they realize this will hit the patients all over?It is not a hotel to close to support .

    Of course attack on doctors isnt right .and govts ,reaction too wasnt best.On the other side one has to think did any one gave any thought to this ?and will improve?Instead the aggression is more from sick and their relatives.Because of it other doctors who are in emergency posted have to face more attacks from relatives like the one in Wenlock happened ?Govt should punish the people who attacked doctors severely.But not doctors.Afterall whole Nation is suffering because of it.God knows how many died because there was nobody to attend at right time?

    Sad that people are resoting to violence.. I agree it's against the law.. But... With all the quota and minority status, students who are actually brilliant are not getting seats... Instead some substandard students who get 50 percent marks are becoming future doctors. I agree that every hospital should have super strict security; but once this security is given, what is the promise, that patients will be given utmost care that is of international standard?

    This is a serious crime. Doctors are life savers and any attack on them should be severely dealt with. Hope The Government will intervene to resolve the problem

    Strict criminal law should be enacted to punish severely those who attack doctors, whether it is physical or even verbal.

    Everyone should realise the fact that no doctor would wish his treating patient should suffer and remain ill. Sometime the treatment doesn’t yield desired results despite doctors’ intensive efforts and try. So, taking law in hand and attacking them or the other para medical staff is absolutely nonsense and condemnable.

    Best idea is to hire and station the bouncers in hospital premises to deal with the errant trouble makers as the prevailing practice in many hospitals in the north.

    What can 5 bouncers do against mob of 50 or 100 people?? I really don't know how this serious situation is going to be addressed?? One side is substandard treatment because of quota and substandard doctors..other side is patients who come last minute for treatment or hospitals where equipment is not available even basic facility like ambulance isnt available.. Indian doctors have to cater to 1 billion population... Which is not a joke!! So we can't compare our health schemes to any other country.. God help us..

    West Bengal government is directly responsible for the whole episode. Government should have arrested all the 200+ mob immediately & punished them, who attacked the junior doctors injuring them badly. Instead of doing justice for the doctors, CM tried to provoke the doctors by threatening. She resorted to insider, outsider story, then started Bengali non Bengali story. She is hesitating to take action on the mob keeping in mind her vote bank politics. CM of a state behaving in such a manner clearly shows she is losing control over the state and frustration.

    The society involving traders, teachers, bankers, businessmen, working class etc. that is silent today on the attacks on doctors should remember that tomorrow it might you that's targeted by a mob and the rest of the people will remain silent.

    when life savers life is on danger what they can do instead of strike. everyone loves their life. attacking on doctors is not acceptable & action should be taken on those 200 people. in this case we should not consider vote bank politics.

    Anil , if one wants to loot money ,one should become a govt servant or politician . It's not worth to become doctor to loot ( 9-15 yrs of training comprising sleepless nights of 36 hour shifts, missed out time with family , intensely competitive entrance exams in between etc. ) . You will know it only if you had studied medicine , or your spouse or children studied medicine. Also in principle, you/your loved ones , should stop consulting doctors . Why make them rich and allow them to loot you. There are lot of home remedies available for various ailments. Also one can always use the internet for a quick fix .
