Chamarajanagar, Jun 13: An incident where a 38-year-old man was disrobed, assaulted and paraded at Veeranapura, Gundlupet, Chamarajanagar on suspicion that he has damaged an idol of the deity has come to light. Two people have been arrested in this connection.

The incident has happened on June 2. The priest of Shaneeshwar temple, Gundlupet taluk and villager had reportedly disrobed a man belonging to backward class and taken on procession in the temple. The video of the act had gone viral in social network on Monday. The family members of the victim had lodged a complaint in Gundlupet police station. Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy who came to know of the incident, condemned it and asked police to take suitable action.

“The assault and nude procession of the man individual in Gundlupet taluk is extremely inhuman. I have asked police to conduct investigations and take action against the guilty. It is unfortunate that caste enmity is continuing in the society. Such incidents should be condemned with one voice,” stated the CM in the tweet.

Arrested priest Shivappa has however said that the man had no clothes on him when he came to the temple. “Therefore, we gave him Lungi. He refused it and came to assault. It appears that the he does not have mental balance,” he alleged.

Police have arrested two suspects including priest Shivappa. The remaining four suspects are absconding and police are on the lookout for them.
