Doha, May 4: Once again, as usual, the feeling of brotherhood, a feeling of togetherness, a feeling of a family get-together was the mood when the first phase of the Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar’s Fifth Annual Talent Competitions took place at the Seraphic Hall of the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Doha, on Friday May 1.
Melinda Fernandes, emcee of the evening, welcomed the gathering. Roy D’Souza led with a prayer and called upon the president of the Club, Alwyn D’Souza to address the gathering.
The evening’s action started with the drawing competitions for children in which more than a hundred children of various age groups tried their hands at the fine art of drawing and painting. This was followed immediately by the Singing Competitions for children and adults, in different age and gender groups.
The all-Mangalorean panel of eminent judges comprised of: Remy D’Souza , a new-comer to Doha from Kuwait, a seasoned guitarist who plays base, rhythm and lead guitar and has good knowledge in creating music tracks, composing tunes and lyrics; multi-linguistic singer Joyce Mascarenhas, who is popularly known as the Usha Uthup of Qatar and who sings in Konkani, English, French, Arabic, Malayalam, Tamil, Singhalese and many other languages and Norbert Pereira, the Konkani composer and singer who has performed alongside Konkani superstars of Konkani such as Wilfy Rebimbus, Henry D’Souza, Claud D’Souza and Melwin Peris and has released three of his own Konkani albums.
Stany Fernandes, the immediate past president of The Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP), Muscat was the guest of honour.
Gracy Fernandes, Ronald Rodrigues and Prakash Noronha were the official time-keepers for the evening. Sound was provided by Glylon Rodrigues.
If nearly three hundred competitors and seven hours of high quality non-stop action (except for a small break of 10 minutes) is any indication, then the first phase of MCC’s Fifth Annual Talent Competitions was a roaring success and the organizers could not have asked for more.
Results of the drawing competition will be announced during the 2nd phase and concluding part of the competition namely, dance, fancy dress and skit competitions will be held at the same venue at 4.00 pm on Friday May 8, 2009.
