Mangaluru to get water for next 4 days, area-wise supply in Udupi

Mangaluru, May 9: According to the water rationing time table, which is under implementation in the wake of the receding water level in the Thumbay dam, the lifeline of the city, the water supply is restored from the morning of Thursday, May 9 and will end at 6 am of May 13.

Pumping in Thumbay dam was stopped on Tuesday and Wednesday according to the water rationing system. The city dwellers, especially those who reside in uphill areas, had a tough time due to the scarcity of water. Due to the airlock issue in the supply pipe, water supply to many areas got affected.

Disconnection of illegal pipe connections from the main water supply line from Thumbay to the city was held on Wednesday, May 9. The locals protested against the officials on Wednesday, when they came to disconnect the illegal connections at Farangipet.

Area-wise water supply restored in Udupi

People of Udupi had suffered a lot since five days of no water supply. Water supply to the city was restored area-wise from Wednesday, May 8. As the water in the Baje Dam is completely dried, water in the nearby ponds is being lifted through pumps and supplied to the area where the main pump is lying. From there the water is purified and filled to overhead tanks.

    Almost all Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and Kuwait have never suffered from water shortages since the 1970s, in spite very poor rainfall - because they started using desalination plants to harvest sea water for domestic use long ago. India, with its long coastline could do the same. But for some reason, our politicians who sanction crores of rupees for useless projects (like massive statues of dead leaders) don't seem to think that desalination plants are a good investment to reduce water scarcity.

    It is very unfortunate that people have to go through due to this water crisis. Water should be sparingly used throughout the year and not when the water level in dams and rivers start drying up. Nobody knows what is in store till the next monsoons arrive. Right now the situation is bad till we get good rainfall.

    DC, municipality, authorities, elected representatives and people should join together to solve the water crisis.

    They should also pro actively plan to avoid the water problem in next year.

    If we leave this only to Govt it will be a failure like this year. A platform should be set up so that people can get involved and urge for a quick and better solution.
