‘Wilson Olivera Nite' is huge hit at jubilee celebrations of St Joseph Church, Belman

Karkala, May 2: The 54th ’Wilson Olivera Nite’ held as part of post centenary silver jubilee celebrations of St Joseph Church, Belman on Wednesday, May 1, was a grand success.

The crowd was delighted as the evening consisted of music, dance and laughter. Popular Konkani songs as well as the latest songs from the album of Wilson Olivera were performed.

In his message Msgr Baptist Menezes, vicar general, Diocese of Udupi said, “It is indeed a day filled with celebration. Beautiful performances have been given by the youth and elders today. Jubilee celebrations began on Saturday and all of you have given your heart and soul for God’s work. We were mesmerized with Wilson Olivera’s songs in Udupi previously and he has done a lot for Konkani language. Though born and brought up in a small remote village, he has made us proud with his compositions. I wish everyone the best. May this evening entertain us all.”

 

Along with Wilson, renowned singers Robin Sequeira, Ashwin D’Costa, Rynel Sequeira, Shilpa Cutinha, Zeena Pereira, Carol Sequeira and Ayshle D'Souza, with their melodious and harmonious voices made the event cheerful.

Wilson Olivera has been bestowed with titles ‘Sangeet Sardar’ and ‘Konkan Mannik’. Prestigious awards such as ‘Konkani Kala Samaj Puraskar’ , ‘Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Award," ‘Divo Sahitya Puraskar’ and ‘Sandesha Music Award’ have been presented to him.

Comedy troupe ‘The Expressions’ with their rib-tickling jokes and one-liners had the crowd roaring with laughter. The team comprising of Alwyn Andrade, Sujatha Andrade, Steven Lewis and Asih Andrade in lead roles, outshined the event.

‘Nach Sobhann’ an integral part of Wilson Olivera’s troupe since several years mesmerized the audience with astounding and breathtaking dance moves. The dances were choreographed by acclaimed choreographer Avil D’Cruz.

Wilson Olivera was ably supported by talented music director Roshan D’Souza - Angelore.

Ace compere Ronald Olivera hosted the event in his inimitable style. He kept the audience entertained with his humour and wit.

Prayer song was sung by the members of St Joseph Church, Belman. On behalf of Belman parishioners Msgr Baptist Menezes felicitated Wilson Olivera. The youth of the church were felicitated for their contributions towards the church. Prior to Wilson Olivera Nite, entertainment programmes were held by the youth of the church. Dances, skits and mando were presented by the youth members of St Joseph Church, Belman. 

Presidents of various associations of the parish were honoured by Msgr. Baptist Menezes.

Fr Edwin D’Souza, parish priest, Fr Prakash Menezes, assistant parish priest, Alwyn Agera, vice-president, Parish Pastoral Council, Fr Faustine D’Souza, secretary, Parish Pastoral Council, Dominic Andrade, coordinator, 18 Commissions and Gregory Menezes, convener, jubilee committee were present on the occasion.

The 54th Wilson Olivera nite started with the prayer song sung by the team lead by Wilson Olivera.

The first song ‘Dhavon Ailo’ was sung by Wilson Olivera and supported by his team. Followed by this were solo performances of Shilpa Cutinha who sang ‘Cuckoo’, ‘Joglanne Marle Borin Zatha’ by Robin Sequeira, ‘Yore Tum Yo Re Moga’ by Carol Sequeira and this song was supported by the Nach Sobhann.

‘Mai’, a solo performance by Wilson Olivera, ‘Monica’ by Zeena Pereira, ‘Tujea Galancher’ by Ashwin D’Costa was supported with a dance in the background.

‘Amchea Bapa’ by Wilson Olivera, ‘Hanv Tuzo Mog Kortam’ duet By Robin and Carol Sequeira was supported by Nach Shoban dancers.

‘Vochonk Asa’ a solo performance by Wilson Olivera, ‘Kenna Kenna’ sung by Rynel Sequeira, ‘17 Samponn 18’ a solo performance with dance by new face of the team Ayshle, ‘Ubgon Bhogta’ duet by Wilson Olivera and Zeena Pereira, ‘Business Ghalo’ solo of Wilson Olivera, ‘Mhaka Tuje Khatir’ duet by Robin Sequeira and Shilpa Cutinha had the audience tapping their feet to the music. ‘Rosy Bai’ by Ashwin D’Costa and Rynel Sequeira was the last song of the melodious evening.

    There was no doubt about it. As always and will be, 'Wilson Olivera shows has been a hit. My best wishes to the organizers and the participants. Even though, I was in Udupi, I could not attend this fantastic event due to previous engagement.
