Udupi, Apr 17: A police team led by district superintendent of police, Nisha James, and additional superintendent of police, Kumarchandra, conducted surprise raid on the sub-jail at Hiriadka Anjaru and conducted a search for contraband goods. The raid was conducted on the basis of complaint about supply of ganja, weapons etc, and also as a precaution on the occasion of election.
The raiding team included Manipal inspector, Sunil Kumar, three sub-inspectors, and 30 constables. The raid began at 5 pm on Monday. It is said that the police questioned some people about ganja, mobile etc and it is said that there were complaints of these things making their way into the jail. The raid lasted for over an hour, and gave rise to a sense of apprehension among the inmates the jail.
The superintendent of police later said that no things were confiscated from inside the jail, and the main purpose of the raid was to conduct checks in view of the election.
