Mangaluru, Apr 6: Lack of parking facilities in Mangaluru has become a major woe of the residents of the city. Many people end up parking their vehicles in no parking zones leading to traffic congestion.

Hence, Mangaluru Police Commissionerate started a drive in March where vehicles parked in ‘no parking areas’ were towed. In just one month Rs 7,04,900 lac was collected as penalty in 910 parking violation cases.

The details obtained from the Police Commissionerate, reveal for heavy vehicles Rs 1,600 (Rs 750 for contractor) was collected as penalty. For light vehicles (car) Rs 1,100 (Rs 500 for contractor) and two wheelers Rs 750 (325 for contractor) was charged as fines.

The drive began on March 2 and vehicles parked in no parking areas, footpaths which created inconvenience to the pedestrians were towed. Three staffs are appointed in a towing vehicle. If they get any information about illegal parking then they will tow the vehicle.

There are two towing vehicles belonged to Mangaluru traffic east and west. Meanwhile, public have expressed dissatisfaction that no traffic police are present when the vehicles were towed.

Speaking to daijiworld.com Sandeep Patil said, "The towing vehicle is introduced to bring discipline among motorists. There were several complaints from the public about the haphazard parking which also created traffic congestion. If the vehicle is being parked in no parking region then vehicle will be towed and fined. We have to ensure there is smooth flow in traffic.

"As of now there are two towing vehicles functioning. We will purchase two more towing vehicles for another two traffic police stations,” said Sandeep Patil.

When asked about details on vehicle damages during towing, Sandeep Patil said, "We take all precautionary measures so vehicles will not get damaged while they are being towed."

When asked about shops acquiring parking spaces, Sandeep Patil said, "Such things are not allowed. We will coordinate with City Corporation and conduct a special drive and take action against this.”

Towing two wheeler even if parked towards extreme left on Ksrtc bijai is wrong. That too I came to collect my blood report. It took only 2 to 3 minutes. No mercy even a lady came with children for blood test is charged RS 1650. And told to take vehicle from kadri station. Instead for first time offenders PL charge on spot RS. 350. Then increase. Show some courtesy while speaking to a person who pays all types of tax also elderly people. Why do they ask a constable to charge instead towing. Even police park their vehicle in no parking area for towing...stupid laws for troubling common people...

The towing or penalising motorists should be a ongoing process it should not be for a season or for the tenure of the current commissioner. I cannot understand anyone questioning the damage of vehicles while towing, what about vehicles parked on footpaths and hence when pedestrians risking their life by walking on the road.

Don't make any arrangement for parking, so that more money can be collected by way of violation of parking. Make paid parking every where in City limits then amount will increase to more than double of this and same time everyone can use government land for their use, instead of giving free to people coming and parking in the morning and taking their vehicle in the late evening without spending even one Rupee from their pocket.

Most of the Parking place in commercial complex have been anchored by shops illegal obtaining licence from MCC. So there is no alternative place to Parking. That's why vehicles are parked on the road side near the complex. The Traffic department must vacate those shopes to park vehicles legally, our Police commissioner will take good steps in this matter. I request Traffic department not to fine till the Parking place is vacated for vehicles to park.

May we know what action is being taken, against malls for charging a parking fee . Every mall except Forum is charging a parking fee . Please ask a query on this to the police commissioner during your next interaction and keep us updated. Appreciate the work done by the Police in Maintaining a strict vigil on rule defaulters. I suggest you to have patrolling in the nights as well as many people ride without helmets.

In developed countries, they use such money for improving the road facilities. Mangalore is not developed, its developingggg.... Use the money to install more vigilant cameras and mail the fines to the address of the owner of vehicle along with the picture of offense carried out. By now most of the people know the result of not paying traffic fines.

For fear of losing money, people discipline themselves.

That law ( underground parking)applicable for recently built buildings.
Saibeen complex was built in 1990-1992 that time when traffic was very less.

You want the own to dig underground and build a parking now???

If for that matter entire carstreet/akele side buildings has to be demolished. is it even logical..?
