Bantwal, Apr 6: Sewage from a manhole has been flowing on the road in the Karnataka housing board layout at Nalkemar, Amtadi village here for some time. Locals fear of epidemic because of unbearable stink and mosquitoes. The place is close to residential area and a school.
The sewage that flows on the road has created a gutter. Children going to government school which has classes from Anganwadi till primary school walk on the road.
The housing board has handed over the administration of the layout to Amtadi panchayat. Panchayat is saying that it has not transferred the administration completely and not conducted the drainage work properly during the construction of the extension. “Use of narrow pipes laid for drainage has caused the problem,” they say.
Mescom department staff staying in the layout has got the manholes cleaned twice but the problem has recurred soon after words. Therefore, the problem can be solved by complete repairs of drainage. But neither the layout staff nor the panchayat is looking into it.
Clean environment is necessary for the good health of residents. The drainage water is likely to join water sources during the monsoon contaminating drinking water. Therefore, the department and Amtadi panchayat needs to solve the problem at the earliest.
Yogish, local member of Amtadi panchayat said that they have not received any complaint about it.
Chennappa Nalkemar, a local said that panchayat members go about on the road but have done nothing to solve the problem. “If broader pipes are laid, it will be good for everybody,” he said.
