New Delhi, Apr 4: The biopic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which was scheduled to release on April 5, will not hit theatres, confirmed film producer Sandip Ssingh on Twitter.
“This is to confirm, our film 'PM Narendra Modi' is not releasing on 5th April. Will update soon,” Ssingh tweeted.
Titled ‘PM Narendra Modi’ the film is directed by Omung Kumar and stars Vivek Oberoi as Modi.
Various sources reveal that the release is delayed as the certification has not yet come through and hence the producers are targeting April 12 as the release date.
However, many feel that the movie is a propaganda vehicle and petitions were filed in High Courts of Delhi and Bombay to stay the release. But on Monday, the High Court rejected the petitions.
Satish Gaikwad, the petitioner who moved to the Bombay High Court, filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the Bombay High Court's order. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the fresh petition seeking to defer the release of the film on April 8.
The movie traces Modi’s evolution through various phases of his life, including his enrollment in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, his long stint as chief minister of Gujarat, and his elevation as PM in 2014.
Besides Vivek, the film also stars Suresh Oberoi, Barkha Sengupta, Prashant Narayanan, Darshan Kumar, Boman Irani, Zarina Wahab, Manoj Joshi, Aanjjan Srivastav, Karan Patel and Akshat R Saluja.
Vivek Oberoi defended the movie and said that the release ahead of the Lok sabha elections was a mere coincidence. When questioned if the film was a propaganda, he shot back, “I don’t need to make him appear as a hero. He is a hero to billions of people across the world.”
