Mangaluru, Mar 30: Padmabhushan awardee Dr B M Hegde along with other dignitaries on Friday March 29 inaugurated the three-day 'Taulava Ucchaya’ (Vishwa Tulu Sammelana) at Town Hall here.

Taulava Ucchaya, commemorating Tulunada Rakshana Vedike’s decennial celebration, was marked by a colourful procession from Hampankatta to Town Hall, depicting the rich cultural heritage of Tulunadu.

President of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike along with honorary president of the Taulava Ucchaya Dr David Frank Fernandes hoisted the flag and also inaugurated exhibition at Town Hall premises.

Addressing the formal function later, Dr B M Hegde said, "We should strive to preserve and promote Tulu language and culture. Tulunada Rakshana Vedike is doing a tremendous job in this front."

Odiyoor Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji said, "Tulu language and culture go hand in hand and everyone should join hands to preserve it. We should speak Tulu and at the same time we should respect other languages too."

Kemaru Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji said, "The first motive of any organization should be to become the voice of the poor and reach out to them. Tulunada Rakshana Vedike is doing that for the past 10 years. We should not only speak Tulu but also raise voice for the survival of Tulu and its culture."

Honorary president of the Taulava Ucchaya Dr David Frank Fernandes said, "This programme is very meaningful. These days children have forgotten the Tulu culture as they are more inclined towards western culture. We should organize such programmes so that the present generation knows the value of Tulu language and its culture."

Researcher Dr K P Putthuraya was honoured with Vishwa Taulava Siri Award.

Founder president of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike Yogesh Shetty Jeppu said, "Tulunada Rakshana Vedike was started ten years ago. Since then we have never looked back and worked in favour of Tulunadu. We have spread our units across Kasargod and abroad as well. We have dedicated several programmes for the welfare of the people which gained 90% of the positive outcome and we stood for the deprived. It is a proud feeling to complete 10 years."

As part of the programme, on March 30 there will be cultural programmes, panel discussions, award ceremony including Vishwa Taulava Chakravarthy Award, Vishwa Taulava Rathna Award and Vishwa Taulava Siri Award.

Programmes pertaining to Tulu films and Tulu Film Awards will be held on March 30 and on March 31 closing ceremony of Taulava Ucchaya will be held. At the same time 20 achievers will be honoured.
