Bengaluru: Man test-driving Range Rover car killed in accident

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 27: A young man, identified as Sagar Jayaram, who took a Range Rover car for test drive was killed in an accident. His wife, who was also in the car, suffered fracture in the spine. The accident happened near Hoskerehalli toll booth on NICE Road in the afternoon on Tuesday, March 26.

Sagar's son, Samarth (6), friend-cum-business partner, Gautham, and driver of the demo car, Shivakumar, were also in the car at the time but all of them escaped unscathed.

The person who lost his life was Sagar Jayaram, an interior decorator. He was a resident of Girinagar here. His wife, Sandhya (27), stands admitted into a private hospital at Uttarahalli with fracture in the spine.

Sagar wanted to buy a Range Rover car and had arranged for test drive of the car from the Jaguar show room on Hosur Road. The car was moving on NICE road and was bound for Sagar's home in Girinagar when tragegedy struck shortly after 2.30 pm. A toll booth employee recounted that the car, which was moving at high speed, appeared to have gone out of control of its driver. It avoided hitting toll booths and hit the divider to extreme left of the road. Then the car hit the guard rails, mowed down a fence and fell ten to 12 metres down. People including toll booth staff rushed to help the accident victims as they feared that the car might catch fire anytime.

The police shifted the people in the car to BGS Hospital. Apparently Sagar was driving the car and demo car driver, Shivakumar, was seated in the passenger's seat. The hospital authorities found the victim brought dead. His mortal remains were shifted to Victoria Hospital for postmortem.

No brakes seemed too have been applied, going by the fact that no tyre marks were left on the road prior to the crash. Sagar Jayaram was bleeding from his face and ears. The people in the car were found to have fastened seat belts and air bags in the car had functioned.

What you said is perfect justification .In India most of the drivers are manual gear vehicle drivers, they do not hv enough knowledge of Automatic transmission vehicle driving .so might be driver got panic and pressed the accelaration.

    1. First of all , without "L" board Government should ban test drive on the road.
    2. It is not safe for drivers and public on the road.
    3. It would be better Government allow test drive only on 40 - 60 KM speed or they should have separate ground for test drive.

In that case, I think he did not even know that the cruise control automatically gets turned off when brakes are applied.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased. Buying these hi end cars for Indian roads and traffic is not suitable. Our Indian cars are best for Indian roads and traffic.

Indian roads are not fir for test drive - Foreign cars.
In foreign countries like Sweden Volvo does crash test @ 160 KMS/HR speed and results are very good, one can watch in discovery channels.

    RIP .

If you drive a new car, be careful because the new car responds differently than your old car.
The break, the steering response etc. Btw I dont understand the logic behind "no tyre marks were left on the road prior to the crash" - the modern ABS do not leave skid marks.

As there is no clutch in the car, he must have confused & could not apply the break instead might have pressed the accelerator.

Cars fitted with ABS systems will not leave tyre marks even under hard braking. Mostly this car would be automatic transmission and such car's brake and accelerator pedals should be operated with only one foot. People used to manual transmission use left leg for brake and right for accelerator and this can trump even seasoned drivers. Sad incident.

    Arvind
For manual transmission left leg is used for clutch and right leg for brake and accelator. Nobody applies brake by left leg in manual transmisdion
This case may be of high speed o ly proper enquiry will reveal the true reason for the accident. RIP Sagar

Let me explain: People who are used to manual transmission, use left leg for brake and right for accelerator while driving automatic, whereas only one leg should be used while driving automatics. Hope that clarifies what I meant.

In SUV's main break & accelerator is at the right side of the steering column & secondary break which we normally call as hand break is at the left side. It's slightly to the left of where the clutch in manual vehicle is & little bit above & small in size & little bit hidden unlike the clutch. Storage box is fitted in the place of hand break in SUV's.

We often see these high end sports cars and sports bikes being tested in Indian roads which is highly dangerous. As our roads are not fit to test them nor to drive them at full capacity.

These vehicles are dangerous to persons sitting inside the car and also for others on road.
