Ajman, Mar 1: Gulf College of Allied Health Sciences, a constituent college of Gulf Medical University hosted a conference on Evidence Based Practice in Physical Therapy on the 28th of February 2009 at GMU Campus in Ajman.
His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman, Ruler’s Court Ajman inaugurated the conference. He honored the invited faculty who delivered talks at the conference. Mr. Thumbay Moideen, President GMU presided over the function. in his welcome note, Moideen highlighted the importance of having such scientific meetings and said “ it has always been our endeavour to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Health and other health authorities in the country to promote high standards of education and training, both to aspiring and in service professionals. We have set a standard in creating a common platform for all experts to share their experience and expertise by having such conferences. He encouraged students and faculty members to take maximum benefit from these events. He thanked the partnering institutions, delegates and the media for their role in making this conference a big success. During his talk, he also mentioned that the present BPT(Bachelor of Physiotherapy) program will be changed to DPT(Doctor of Physical Therapy) by next year.
Officials from Emirates Physiotherapy Society, Arab Union of Physical Therapists and other associations attended the conference.
The purpose of the conference is to offer a common platform for professionals and physical therapists to exchange knowledge about Evidence Based Practice and to determine the extent to which EBP can be used as a way for professional development and standardization of therapeutic intervention. The conference provided participants with the information and tools needed to appreciate the philosophy, history, and value of evidence-based practice, understand what constitutes evidence, search efficiently for applicable evidence in the literature, evaluate the findings in the literature, and integrate the evidence with clinical judgement and individual patient preferences and values.
Over 200 healthcare and medical professionals from all over the UAE participated in the conference. Dr. William Murrell from Dubai Bone & Joint Centre and Prof. Mohsen El Sayyad, Dr. Amit Chaturvedi and Dr. Rizwana Shaikh from GMU delivered talks during the conference.
