Chikkamagaluru, Feb 18: Unknown miscreants hurled petrol bombs on the forest check post at Basarikal near here on Sunday February 17 morning. Luckily the attack did not result in any major damage.
Kudremukh National Park area is known for Naxal activities. Basarikal forest check post is located within this national park.
Five petrol bombs were tossed at the check post at around 3.30 am on Sunday. There was no one inside the check post when this incident happened. However, some papers and documents were burnt down as the bombs which were tossed directly at the spot where the staff used to sit.
There is suspicion that this could be the act of Naxal gangs. It is also possible that gangs involved with timber smuggling from inside the forests or cattle thieves could have thought of this plan to divert the attention of the forest staff.
Immediately after they came to know that the check post was attacked, additional district superintendent of police, Shilpa, police personnel, and officials of forest department rushed to the spot and assessed the situation.
Although the needle of suspicion has turned towards the naxals, the officials note that the region has not witnessed any Naxal activity in the recent past. Therefore, the possibility of someone else having indulged in this destructive activity is gaining credence. A detailed investigation, it is hoped, will bring out the truth.
