Udupi: ‘Falling Female Ratio Cause for Serious Concern’

Udupi, Jan 24: Dr Pratap Kumar, head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology Kasturba Medical College and Hospital Manipal (KMC) and head of the legal advisory committee on anti-sex determination during pregnancy act, felt that the country is bound to face a critical problem in future, in view of the ratio of girls both in national and local levels, as compared to boys.

He was speaking after inaugurating the National Girls Protection Day observation organized by Lions and Lioness Clubs of Manipal on Friday January 23, at the Anganwadi Training Centre of KMC.

Girls require nutritious food and security both when they are young and during their teen years. There is a need to ensure that the gender discrimination bane does not harm them, he said.

Manipal Lions Club president Santosh Kumar Hejmady, Anganwadi Training Centre principal N Madhav Rao and Lioness Club president Sarita Santosh were present. Assistant professor in the department of gynaecology, KMC, Lakshmi participated as resource person.

    As far killing female children can never be be justified one good thing about falling sex ration is that less female children means there will be more boys and this may end the terrible system of dowry in Indian society

    One of the ill-effects of some of the dangerous environmental pollutants is change in sex ratio, e.g. among fish. Junk food which could easily contain dangerous additives/preservatives, pesticide residue and GM foods are all suspect for this and much more. The Karnatak Govt Food and Agriculture Departments better take this hint seriously.

    We must have a day all over India for the protection of Girls & Women. This way one day we will be protecting the human race. Scientifically and as per probability, the population of male and female should be equal. Why this discrepancy? Is it due to our thinking that male is superior and indispensable? Not only educating our future generation about the equality of both, but also more incentives and protection to females in all avenues.
