Mangaluru, Feb 1: To reduce traffic congestion as well as to enable smooth road widening work, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate is planning to ban rallies from Ambedkar Circle to DC’s office.
Addressing a press meet at Mangaluru Press Club on Friday, February 1, Mangaluru police commissioner T R Suresh said, “At present, roads in Mangaluru are not in a state where widening can take place. Every year there is an inclusion of 1 lac vehicles and while it is challenging to provide basic facilities, procession and rallies cause further inconvenience resulting in traffic congestion.”
With conventions and programmes being held in Nehru Maidan and Football ground, there are plans to introduce parking facilities in the ground itself, whenever such programmes occur to avoid congestion, Suresh added.
“Many a time, private events, marriage functions also contribute to traffic congestion. Meetings will be held with local corporations, gram panchayats to create awareness as well as effectively plan events,” he added.
“Police are taking stringent action against drug menace in the city and even creating awareness in educational institutions. Police have taken strict steps with regard to tackling rowdy elements and their activities in the city,” Suresh added.
“Police phone-in-programme was first introduced by then police commissioner Chandrashekar. This programme helps police directly know the problems faced by the people. We can attend 35 calls in an hour and address people’s problem directly and help in overall development on the city,” the commissioner said.
"We have stressed for smooth vehicular movement. Instead of ‘No horn day’, we have decided to implement 'No Horn Zone'. We have identified places like Hampankatta to Clock tower and KMC to Milagres road and notification has been passed. Awareness will be created and ‘No horn Zone’ will be implemented soon,” said T R Suresh.
DCP Uma Prashanth, district working journalist union president Srinivas Indaje, general secretary Ibrahim Adkastala and others were present.
