Mangaluru, Feb 2: Prayers will he held in memory of late George Fernandes, former Union minister and well known labour leader, at Bejai Church on Saturday, February 2 at 3.30 pm. Then his ashes will be buried at Bejai cemetery.
Michael Fernandes, brother of George Fernandes and Felix D Souza, labour leader of Mumbai, will be bringing the funeral ashes of George Fernandes from Delhi on Saturday noon. A large number of clergy, relatives and members of community are expected to take part in this prayer ceremony.
Thereafter a public condolence meet will be held at T V Raman Pai Hall at 5 pm. Mayor, local MP, MLAs and political leaders will pay homage to great leader of soil.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Felix D Souza said, "Bejai is the birth place of George Fernandes. Many of his relatives and friends residing around Mangaluru could not attend his funeral. So we are bringing his funeral ashes for prayers. Then the ashes will be buried at Bejai cemetery. We appeal to the public to join the condolence meet at T V Raman Pai Hall later. It is our duty to show our solidarity with his family and relatives and respect his personality."
Catholic Sabha to hold condolence meet on February 5
Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru has scheduled a condolence meet for late George Fernandes at Bejai Church Auditorium, at 5.30 pm on February 5.
Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru diocese unit president Rolphy D’ Costa has requested people from all communities to attend the condolence meet.
Bishop of Mangaluru, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, district in charge minister U T Khader, MLC Ivan D’ Souza, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath, Bharath Shetty, Sanjeeva Matandoor, Harish Poonja, Rajesh Nayak and others are expected to attend the meeting.
