Ashes of George Fernandes to be buried at Bejai Church cemetery on Feb 2

Mangaluru, Feb 2: Prayers will he held in memory of late George Fernandes, former Union minister and well known labour leader, at Bejai Church on Saturday, February 2 at 3.30 pm. Then his ashes will be buried at Bejai cemetery. 

Michael Fernandes, brother of George Fernandes and Felix D Souza, labour leader of Mumbai, will be bringing the funeral ashes of George Fernandes from Delhi on Saturday noon. A large number of clergy, relatives and members of community are expected to take part in this prayer ceremony. 

Thereafter a public condolence meet will be held at T V Raman Pai Hall at 5 pm. Mayor, local MP, MLAs and political leaders will pay homage to great leader of soil. 

Speaking to Daijiworld, Felix D Souza said, "Bejai is the birth place of George Fernandes. Many of his relatives and friends residing around Mangaluru could not attend his funeral. So we are bringing his funeral ashes for prayers. Then the ashes will be buried at Bejai cemetery. We appeal to the public to join the condolence meet at T V Raman Pai Hall later. It is our duty to show our solidarity with his family and relatives and respect his personality." 

Catholic Sabha to hold condolence meet on February 5 

Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru has scheduled a condolence meet for late George Fernandes at Bejai Church Auditorium, at 5.30 pm on February 5. 

Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru diocese unit president Rolphy D’ Costa has requested people from all communities to attend the condolence meet. 

Bishop of Mangaluru, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, district in charge minister U T Khader, MLC Ivan D’ Souza, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath, Bharath Shetty, Sanjeeva Matandoor, Harish Poonja, Rajesh Nayak and others are expected to attend the meeting.

    There is no place for burying ashes of a human in the Christian cemetery except the body of a human. Burying ashes in the cemetery is a violation of rules as per the Bible and as per Christian faith.
    I can forgive George Fernandes for laying mines on the Railway tracks. I have doubts that George Fernandes would never say to fire his body after his death. He had Alzheimers disease for several years. I object burying ashes in the Christian cemetery.

    Rome (CNN)The Vatican announced Tuesday that Catholics may be cremated but should not have their ashes scattered at sea or kept in urns at home.

    According to new guidelines from the Vatican's doctrinal office, cremated remains should be kept in a "sacred place" such as a church cemetery. Ashes should not be divided up between family members, "nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects."

    In 1963, the Vatican said burial of deceased bodies should be the norm, but cremation is not "opposed per se to the Christian religion." Catholic funeral rites should not be denied to those who had asked to be cremated, the church said.Oct 25, 2016

    Is cremation a sin, or is it an ethical option for Christians?

    The consensus among most Christian traditions—including evangelicals—is that because the Bible does not directly forbid cremation, it is not a sin. As Timothy George says, “While the weight of Christian tradition clearly favors burial, the Bible nowhere explicitly condemns cremation.”

    However, there is a divide about whether it is prudent and acceptable for Christians to choose cremation. John MacArthur, for example, has said, “the state of what remains of the old body is unimportant” and that we need not focus on “how to dispose of our earthly bodies.”

    “Obviously any buried body will eventually decompose (Eccles. 12:7),” MacArthur adds, “So cremation isn't a strange or wrong practice—it merely accelerates the natural process of oxidation.”

    You can find in the Holy Bible, a body of a human is cremated not the ashes of a human. Nobody has the right to take away the rites of the bible and if they do so their soul will be put to death for ever.
    Every human is well aware of that a human body will decompose but not the bones of a human. Bones of a human will not decompose.
    Hence burning a body of a human is forbidden in the christian faith. So such burnt body ashes should not be cremated in the christian cemetery. A christian human's body willingly burning is sacrilege.
    Catholic hierarchy might have given permission to those burnt in air crash or motor crash or burnt body of a suicidal man's half burnt body shall be cremated in the cemetery.
    I and the Christians are objecting cremating ashes in the cemetery.

    Cremation of deceased christian bod in a Christian cemetery is not a sin for Christians.
    Lit and fire a Christian body then cremating ashes in a Christian cemetery is a Sin.

    As a Christian by Baptism first and as a Native of Mangalore soil nextt. it is nice that his ashes to be burried in his home parish Bijai. He rose to that high level from this place. So not only Christians but all people of India have to pay homage to this great politician and good man. He contributed immensely to India and the poor and downdroden victims. He loved society and socialism at the same time lived to his principles and values whatever he believed. So we the people of India irrespective of any religion salute Him. We are proud of him. Long live George Fernandes. Lord Jesus Christ taught us whatever you do to the least of my people you did it to me. So may be he tried to follow this at least. RIP to him. May his soul rest in peace.

    I hope Clarence Pais, originally Bejai-based lawyer and childhood friend of George Fernandes, will be there, health permitting. Clarence was successful in freeing the Christians of India (Catholics and Protestants) from the legal obligation to obtain probate, which was a time-consuming and expensive procedure. It was an unwanted legacy from the Colonial British rule, primarily to help the British in India.
    Clarence first went through the judicial process and failed in the Supreme Court. Next, he, then President of the Catholic Association of South Kanara, took the Parliamentary route; the door for it was opened by George Fernandes, his childhood friend.
    George Fernandes was then Defence Minister in Vajpayee’s Cabinet and Arun Jaitley was Law Minister. George phoned Jaitley to get an appointment for Clarence. At the meeting, Jaitlety said, “What have Indian Christians been doing for the last 200 years, only to wake up now for this relief which they rightly deserve?”
    The rest is history. The Cabinet approved the relief sought, a Bill was introduced and passed as Act No 26 of 2002. It reduced the work and income of lawyers (including Clarence) but is a great boon to Christians, thanks to critical help from George Fernandes.

    If a person receives baptism, fist communion and confirmation, then he/she is accepted as Catholic by the Church. Therefore by Church law, if his/her family requests Church funeral and burial services, the priest has to provide theses services, regardless of whether the individual was a pious Catholic or not.

    I am asking my fellow parishioners. If they are there in this forum as I usually attend the 5 pm mass on saturday. Last week also there was some problem and the mass got delayed. So just asking.
