MANGALORE, Jan 10: The State Government’s proposal to introduce yoga as a compulsory subject for primary and high school students has been criticised by the Rationalist Association of Mangalore.
Obtaining the information under the provisions of the Right to Information Act, the association members said that the Government had proposed to make yoga education compulsory from class one to tenth standard with practical and theory examinations.
Narendra Nayak, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Association, and K.S. Madhava Rao, president of Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association, have said in a press release here on Friday that no solid study had been done to support the claims of the Government that the practice of yoga was “doubtlessly useful or totally safe”.
The Department of State Educational Research and Training had not conducted any study to establish the benefits or ill-effects of yoga, they said.
