Udupi, Jan 2: A function for conferring the ‘New Year-2009' Award (Commerce and Industry) was held at the Chaitya Hall of Hotel Valley View Manipal on Thursday January 1.
The event was jointly organized by the Academy of General Education, Udupi-Manipal Rotary Club and Syndicate Bank.
Speaking on the occasion, Srinivas Group of Industries president and chartered accountant A Raghavendra, who was conferred with the award meant for the commerce and industrial sector, said that teaching the technique of catching the fish is better than providing fish on a platter to the people. This helps people to independently pursue vocations and stand on their own legs, he explained.
Providing the students with employment-oriented professional education benefits the society in general. The youth must follow in the footsteps of great leaders and achievers like Dr T M A Pai, Dr T A Pai and K K Pai and contribute to the moral, cultural, educational and financial progress of the country, he advised.
Dr P D Shenoy, retired secretary, Union Labour department received the award for his achievement in the field of service sector, while Dr S Chandrashekar Shetty, vice-chancellor, Devaraj Urs University, Kolar received the award for his achievement in the field of education.
K Krishna Shetty, governor, Rotary district 3180, presided over the function. Dr Ramdas M Pai, chancellor, Manipal University and B Pramod, general manager, Syndicate Bank were present on the occasion.
H N S Rao, general manager, ICDS, Dr P Sripati Rao, dean, KMC, Manipal and Sujir Prabhakar, deputy general manager, Syndicate BankUdupi Regional office, introduced the award winners. Mitra K, president, Udupi- Manipal Rotary Club, introduced the president of the function.
Dr A Krishna Rao, president, Academy of General Education, Manipal, welcomed the gathering. Dr Shantaram compered the programme.
