Bangalore, Dec 19: The year is about to end, but corruption does not cease or end,'' said a pained Lok Ayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde. He should know. On Thursday, he completed yet another raid, his 12th this year, and snared ten more officials for disproportionate assets which add up to Rs 14.80 crore. Justice Hegde's perseverance given his limited powers is admirable, but the corrupt among the bureaucracy seem to be persevering unconcernedly with their crooked ways.
The raided officials include four from Bangalore and one circle inspector of police from Bijapur whose assets alone are worth more than Rs 2 crore against his known sources of income which isn't more than Rs 20 lakh. While BBMP assistant engineer Devaraj had assets worth more than Rs 1.61 crore, assets of S R Patellapa, astt director (agriculture) totalled Rs 1.28 crore. Food inspector Nagalingaiah, again from Bangalore, had assets worth Rs 92 lakh. Interestingly, he was to figure in the previous raid but had been spared only because of his daughter's marriage. Jayashankar, development officer KIADB, Bangalore, whose assets are worth Rs 1.52 crore, was trapped by the Lok Ayukta last year accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh.
The others (with assets in brackets) include: C M Chandre Gowda, AEE attached to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), Mysore (Rs 3 crore); IFS officer C Srinivasan, conservator of forest, Mysore (Rs 1.55 crore); S C Jayachandra, chief engineer (Hemavathi project), Gorur (Rs 84.53 lakh); Veeregowda, village pancahayat secretary, Rajanukunte, Yelahanka (Rs 94.11 lakh) and Chandrashekhar Venkanna Chowhan, AEE, Almatti (Rs 77.42 lakh).
Expressing concern about the increasing corruption among bureaucrats, Hegde felt that Rule 23 of Karnataka Civil Service (Conduct) Rules should be amended. He suggested that they, like legislators, should submit details of their assets to the Lok Ayukta. The raids will continue and details of the concealed assets are being scanned, he said.
