Mangalore, Dec 17: A lecture on ‘Problems of Customs Airport’ was organized by the Kanara Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Tuesday December 16.
Speaking on the occasion, R S Siddhu, customs commissioner, said that usage capacity must be guaranteed before recommending the conversion of an airport into customs airport.
Some of the fundamental facilities will have to be adopted for the functioning of cargo in the customs airport. The department needs to invest money in this project and in return it expects guaranteed usage and income, he said.
The user’s name, quantity of export and import, and other details must be clearly mentioned in the recommendation, said Siddhu.
Vegetables from Karnataka are exported to foreign countries from Thiruvananthapuram. But, if the customs airport is located here, the vegetables can be exported from here directly, said Captain John Prasad Menezes, former president, KCCI.
A recommendation has been made to higher authorities for appointment of a full-time assistant commissioner at Mangalore airport, he said.
