Bangalore, Dec 16: The National Knowledge Commission, which was set up in 2005 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to prepare a blueprint for reforming knowledge related institutions and infrastructure, has submitted 200 recommendations to the government on 24 focus areas till date.
Informing this at a function organised by the All India Management Association here, Pitroda pointed out, “Some of the recommendations include libraries, translation, language, higher education, right to education and vocation guidance”.
“The country is set to witness a knowledge revolution in 25 years. There is no quick fix solution to achieve this,” said Pitroda.
On vocational education, Pitroda said that there was a disconnect between the training provided and market requirements. “On the one hand there were too many people in some areas and too little jobs, while in other areas, there were too little people for too many jobs. The Commission has recommended the need for expanding capacity through innovative delivery models including public private partnership model,” he said.
On the quality of education in the country, he said, “Except the top institutions and some institutes of excellence like Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), the overall quality of education requires tremendous improvement in various aspects. Graduates are not employable immediately and have to be retrained”.
Recommending expansion, execution, equity and access in the spheres of higher education, Pitroda said that the Commission has been suggesting to set up a regulatory authority for higher education which has met with a lot of resistance and not being accepted. He further said that the translation mission recommended by the Commission, will create more than 2.5 lakh jobs.
