Panaji, Dec 21: The sheer luck helped Canacona police to crack down the case of a rape and robbery of British woman.
The accused who was on the run for jail break for almost a month was finally apprehended by Goa police on Thursday morning in Margao town, only to find that he was a suspect in a rape of a British woman at Canacona, few hours before his arrest.
Ramchandran Y, 31, a native of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu, was on the run for almost a month after his arrest in a robbery of Rs 30 lac at Pernem town in North Goa.
The accused had suspected in a rape and robbery of a 48-year-old British woman at Canacona on the way to Palolem beach in South Goa during wee hours this morning.
Canacona Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai said that the accused was arrested in Margao town by Pernem police who were in search for him for jail break.
“When the accused was arrested, Pernem police had no slight inkling that he was also involved in a fresh case of rape at Canacona, few hours earlier,” Prabhudesai said.
During the interrogation, the accused was found to be carrying ATM card of the British woman, whom he had raped earlier in the wee hours.
“That is when Pernem police suspected his involvement in other crimes and then he was finally linked to Canacona rape case, as search was already on for him,” Prabhudesai said.
A British woman had complained to Canacona police that around 4 am when she was walking back from the railway station, an unknown accused pushed her into a paddy field and raped her. She had also alleged that he robbed her belongings including three bags.
The woman has been regular visitor to the State since last ten years.
