Udupi, Dec 14: By laying extra emphasis on one language, we are causing destruction of not only the regionally-spoken Kannada, but also cultural diversity, said Dr K V Narayan, senior fellow, Mysore Bharatiya Bhasha Samskar.
Dr Narayan was delivering the keynote address at a symposium on ‘Globalization—Language and Culture’, that was organized at Kallianpur Milagres College silver jubilee auditorium on Friday December 12.
Kannada is spoken in various forms across the state. The tribal communities such as Soliga, Jenukuruba, Irula, and others, speak Kannada differently, he said. We are losing our diversity owing to the rules framed by us. We insist on them coming into the mainstream of society by identifying them as native Kannadigas. This poses a question as to whether they have to come to the mainstream of society by giving up their diversity, he queried.
Fr Marcel Saldanha, correspondent, Milagres Group of education institutions, inaugurated the symposium. The programme was presided over by principal Fr Fred Masceranhas. Sophia Dias and Cyril Mathias were also present on the occasion.
Prof Narayan M Hegde welcomed the gathering and Vincent Alva compered the programme. Dr Jayanti Prasad Noutial presented a composition on ‘Globalization and Language’. Dr Pattabhirama Somayaji presented a composition on ‘Globalization and Culture’. Dr M Prabhakar Joshi delivered the valedictory speech.
