Bantwal, Dec 13: A gang of six robbers made a failed attempt to rob the Chelur branch of Farmers Service Cooperative Society Panemangalore in the afternoon of Friday December 12.
The robbers had parked their car a little away from the bank's branch and waited for the staff to leave before executing their plan. Reportedly, four masked men entered the bank while their two companions remained in the car. One of them was in the driver's seat and the engine of the car was kept in running condition. During the lunch time, the robbers entered the bank at around 2.10 pm and threatened employees Narayan and Jalaja who were having their lunch, at knife-point. The employees raised an alarm, at which premises owner Janardan Moolya rushed to the spot and called for help.
As soon as people started gathering around, the robbers ran away in their car. People pelted stones at the car, but failed to stop the robbers even though the windshield of the car was damaged due to stone pelting.
A complaint was filed with the Bantwal rural police station by the bank president. The police immediately sealed off roads branching out of the village but did not succeed in nabbing the culprits.
