Mangaluru, Dec 16: "The district prison here has the capacity to accommodate 210 inmates. It currently has 414 inmates," said state home minister, Dr G Parameshwar.
He was replying to question raised by MLC, Ivan D'Souza, in the legislative council. "In the women's section of the prison, there is provision to accommodate ten, but only seven are currently kept there. In male section, there is provision for 200 inmates but now there are 407," he explained.
He said that in the 2018-19 budget, it was announced that a high-security prison with an investment of Rs 85 crore would be built in Dakshina Kannada district.

“As many as 63 acres of land has been sanctioned for the purpose in Mudipu village, Bantwal taluk. Currently, compound wall work is in progress. The government issued order on September 19 this year, giving in-principal permission for constructing non-residential building and road. Relating to supply of drugs in the district prison, seven cases were registered between July 1, 2017 and November 30 this year, which are under investigation. Mobile jammers have been used to restrict cellphone use by prison inmates. Medical detectors and baggage scanners have been deployed at the entry point of the prison," the minister explained.
