Udupi, Dec 11: The personnel of Udupi District Crime Intelligence Bureau arrested two inter-state arms smugglers, who were engaged in supplying pistols and ammunition illegally, on Wednesday December 10. Four unlicensed pistols and 12 live rounds were recovered from them.
Deepak Kumar Pandey(24) from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and Sagar Patel(23) from Tilakwadi were arrested from near the local service bus stand by the police personnel on the morning of Wednesday. The operation was launched, based on reliable information. The policemen were led by inspector Srinivasa Raju during the operation.
The policemen approached the above youth, who had alighted from a bus in the local bus stand at around 4.30 am and questioned them. As the youth groped for satisfactory replies, their bags were checked. The policemen found the pistols and live rounds in their bags.
It is learnt, that the arrested persons have been in the business of inter-state arms smuggling since some time and are in touch with underworld goons. They came to the state a few days back. The police have got information, that they supplied pistols to some underworld elements in Bangalore. They wanted to sell pistols and ammunition in the coastal region for a high price. The policemen said, that they are yet to ascertain about the contacts the smugglers have, in the coastal belt.
The persons were in the possession of both the country made and foreign made pistols. The policemen have confiscated goods worth around Rs 3.5 lac from the two, including two mobile sets. Udupi town policemen have taken up investigation.
District superintendent of police Pravin Madhukar confirmed that the arrested persons were not citizens of Bangladesh.
