Mangaluru: Important decisions on airport within a week at Delhi meeting

Mangaluru, Dec 12: A high level meeting will be convened within a week at New Delhi to take a final decision on things like introducing flights on six new routes, change of Air India Express flight timings between the city and Abu Dhabi and steps aimed at improving the international airport here. This was stated by union minister for civil aviation, Suresh Prabhu, during his visit to the city on Tuesday December 11.

On his arrival at the airport here on Tuesday December 11 morning, Prabhu exchanged information with the officials of the airport about the current situation of the airport and flight services. On this occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who also happens to be the chairman of the airport advisory committee here, requested the minister to meet certain supplementary demands for developing this airport.

The minister, who went through the petition, said that he has already received a memorandum from Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and that he will initiate suitable steps in the matter.

After the meeting, Nalin said that decisions on introducing flights on new routes, changing of flight to Abu Dhabi etc can be taken only after holding discussions with the respective flight operators. Therefore, the minister has called for a meeting at New Delhi, he reasoned. He said that all details about the steps needed to further improve facilities at the airport here have been furnished to the minister, and he has been urged to begin Indigo Airlines flights from here to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, and to start new Air India services between the city and Delhi, Pune, Goa and Bengaluru.

MP Nalin pleads with union minister to increase number of flights

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel met union minister for civil aviation, Suresh Prabhu, at the airport here on Tuesday December 11. He held consultation with the minister for some time and discussed various aspects.

Kateel also handed over a memorandum to Prabhu, urging him to see that additional flights from here are operated to different destinations within the country and abroad.

The airport employees who are protesting against the privatization move of the airport continued with their protest on the second day on Tuesday. A delegation of the employees met the minster at the airport and presented to him a request letter seeking to drop airport privatization move. President of the local branch of the union, Arvind Gaonkar, secretary, Shravan Kumar, and treasurer, Shakeel, were present.

    Dear citizens, please read till the end before you comment in favour of privatisation.
    you have not understood what government has planned in the name of PPP. Let me make you understand what the scam is. Any Airport the development work scope is limited to expansion of runway, taxiway, aprons and aerobriges. In Mangalore Airport it has reached its optimum level or saturation stage of growth in respect of all these facilities.
    In 2006 the new runway to its maximum capacity is constructed, 2010 new integrated building was constructed and now the work is awarded for further expansion of Terminal building and work under process.
    2018 two more aerobridges has been added parking bay has been increased to 14.

    And now Gov wants to sell Mangalore Airport in the name of development after completing all the works and exhausting it's funds.. It's big scam which public doesn't come to know.
    AAI which is operating now is a Mini ratna organization which is paying hundreds of crores as dividends.

    If Government really wants to develop airports let them develop Airports Like mysore, Hasan, Shiomga etc.. Let me make it clear that by privatisation only the Airport operators will change and the Airline services, custom service, immigration Services remain the same
    And for the information of all readers let me tell you that what is so called world class Kannur Airport has been designed and developed by Airports Authoority of India’s engineers and that too who worked in mangalore.
    I strongly oppose Governments decisions to privatize Manglore

    With most of north Kerala's passenger traffic going to Kannur, the Mangalore airport may not make much money in the future.

    There will be fewer flights, and lesser income.

    The Government might be planning to hand over the potentially loss-making unit to private ownership.

    You are 100% Malayalee. Always thinking how to bring a bad name and stop devolpments of Mangalore city and its infrastructure devolpments. Mangaloreans are suffering like hell with its Railways station under the jurisdiction of Kerala management, now the same people have started their fight to stop the growth of Mangalore airport

    what is said above is true. Flights from gulf countries carries more than 60% passengers from north Kerala. They will shift to Kannur. Secondly, baggage belt location is congested for international flights, it is always crowded. If two flights arrives at the same time, then people will be standing in the staircase. It is definitely not designed well. Secondly, in PPP model government can recover the money spent to build other airports.
