Karwar, Dec 11: Kaiga nuclear power plant near here has created a new world record by continuously generating power without any break for 941 days. This record was created at 9.19 am on Monday December 10.
Heysham atomic power plant in England had held world record so far for generating power without any break for 940 days. Kaiga Unit - 1, which began power generation on May 13, 2016, continues to produce power without a break even now. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has permitted the unit to continue to generate power till December 31 this year. Therefore the unit is sure to remain in operation for 19 more days.
Once this happens, the Kaiga nuclear reactor will get credit for being the only unit in the world to have generated power without any let up for 962 days.
Earlier in the year, the Kaiga first unit had created new world record on October 24 by completing 894 days of power generation without break among heavy water reactors.
The unit will be shut down for 45 days after January 1 for maintenance, after which it will begin to generate power again.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has congratulated the Indian scientists and engineers involved with atomic energy generation in India for creating this world record. Scientist of Kaiga atomic power unit, Mohanram, said that by safely generating nuclear power for 941 days continuously, Kaiga unit 1 has surprised nuclear scientists from the world over. He gave credit for the feat to the workers and scientists who have been working unitedly and tirelessly at the plant.
