Mangaluru: NITK tollgate - buses might suspend operations due to hike in fee

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 10: The private service and express buses which move through the tollgate near NITK Suratkal have been given deadline of December 10 by the toll staff to pay revised toll fee. The private service and express buses which move towards Kinnigoli and Udupi through this tollgate will have to shell out huge fee. The hike in fee has turned out to be a huge burden for common people and the buses.

It is said that owners of buses have decided to suspend operations of buses if toll charges are not brought down.

Kinnigoli Zone Bus Owners Association president, Durgaprasad Shetty, said that the NITK toll new contractors have asked the buses to either pay revised rates with effect from December 10 or stop operations. "About 35 buses move to Kinnigoli from Suratkal every day. Till now, buses going to Kinnigoli used to get passes at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month, while Udupi express buses got monthly passes at Rs 5,500. Now we have been asked to hike the fee to Rs 17,000 or 18,000 which will be a huge burden on bus owners and passengers," he explained.

Shetty pointed out that no toll charges are collected for local buses in Hejamady and Talapady toll gates and wanted to know why arbitrary rules have been implemented here. He said that the buses are facing shortage of daily collection. "We have brought to the notice of the district in-charge minister about our demand on Sunday.  He has promised to instruct the deputy commissioner suitably," he added.

We Mangalorean pay more tax than the north Indians ,We don't want to fight with government bodies over the issues. This non violence has led Road and transport ministers to do as their wish, give contract to fraud contractors who just keeps giving bribe to Ministers. We should be united for a great cause (toll gate, pump well fly over) , Bus association just hire a good advocate so that buses KA 19, KA 20 can get a long term peace from these tollgate .

Highways should be built outside cities. Do not let NHAI convert existing city/village roads to highways (This is called daylight Robbery) . NHAI should build entirely new routes and leave existing roads to the local governments to manage . There should have been alternate routes where no toll is to be paid. In this case the existing Udipi mangalore roads have been taken over by NHAI and given to private authorities to build and operate. Thus the locals will have to suffer.

Few days back there was a news about suspending NITK tollgate. Now contract have been renewed for collecting Toll in NITK Tollgate. Paying toll is not a problem here, actual problem is paying Toll Twice with in the 12 kms.

Now only options with 1) Bus owners association is to protest against the toll hike or 2) Hike ticket charges (any cost involved in operating the business to be transferred to end users). I feel its better for bus owners association to go with option 2. if they go with option 1 mentioned above they will not get any support from general public. if bus owners association goes with price hike definitely general public too will face the heat of toll charges and come to protest. ijji da yankle daye mandebechha bus dakul katunatha pandh manipande kulluvar.

This is a great opportunity for the bus owners. They can make a stop at Surathkal tollgate on either side. People travelling both sides can switchover buses on either side. People do not have to pay toll charge . So more income to bus owners as number of buses can be increased. Can the road owners stop the people from crossing ?

The news was only for Buses. For Cars you remember what Udipi MP said - "Law does not provide travel without toll in the country". Since we have elected these leaders we have to pay to them
