Bengaluru, Dec 6: The state government is all set to bring an amendement to the RTE in order to increase the admission of children in government schools.
Only if the government schools are not available within the prescribed limit of the local area, the private schools will be allowed to admit children under the RTE act. This landmark decision was taken in the cabinet meeting that was held on Wednesday, December 5 in the city. In the meeting approval was given to 'The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, Karnataka (amendment) rule 2018'.
The amendment bid will be presented on the floor of both the legislative houses for confirmation in the next session. Giving the details after the cabinet meeting, Krishna Byre Gowda, minister for law and parliamentray affairs said, "Consent is given to bring amendment to the RTE act. Permission to admission to private schools will be given Only in local areas where there is no government school. By bringing the amendment, the government has agreed to pay a prescribed fee to admit the children to private schools in areas where there are no government schools."
"Government school should be available in the local area and children should be provided with free and compulsory education there. If the government school is not available in a particular locality, then a private school will be identified in that locality and the government will pay the fee for the children who will get admission into such a school. This RTE rule is implemented. In the state we had given consent to admit children to private schools even when the government school was available in the vicinity. This was done as the rule was not followed properly. But this was not the intention of the RTE act. So it is proposed to bring amendement in the protocol and consent for the same is given by the cabinet of ministers. Going forward, admission to private schools will be allowed only in areas, where there is no government schools," added Krishna Byre Gowda.
