Udupi, Dec 4: The Badagabettu Credit Co-operative Society has bagged this year’s national award instituted by the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC), for its significant achievement in the co-operative sector.
The award consists of a citation letter and Rs 50,000 in cash, and will be presented by the end of December, said Jayakar Shetty Indrali, chairman of the Society, in a press release.
Badagubettu Credit Co-operative Society has been a leader in the field in the district, and has previously received recognition from SCDCC Bank, as well as taluk-level and state-level awards in the past. The Scoiety was set up by Katpady Beedu Jagannath Ballal in 1918.
Initially, it was restricted to advancing agricultural loans and distribution of rations. Following the lack of an efficient managing committee, B Jayakar Shetty was appointed the administrative officer by the government in 1979.
Veterans of the co-operative movement Shambu Shetty, Dr S Ramanand Bhat, Sanjeev Kanchan, D K Satyanarayan, and Chandrashekar Shettigar, eventually led the managing committee to prosperity. The society has achieved steady progress over the past three decades, making contributions to society in the fields of education, health, sports, and social welfare, stated the press release.
