Bengaluru, Nov 30: A couple which claimed themselves to be relatives of former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, succeeded in winning over the trust of the people and deceive them to the tune of about Rs 20 crore. The culprits have been identified as Kiran and Saubhagya from Preetinagara near Laggere here.
Kiran and Saubhagya run a departmental store in Bengaluru (west). For earning the faith of the people, they used to coin the name of former Prime Minister, Deve Gowda, duly claiming themselves to be his close relatives. They also convinced some people to part with about Rs 20 crore, duly promising to help them acquire prime landed property.

On October 9 this year, C Vijay Kumar from Rajagopal Nagar had filed complaint against the couple. Vijay Kumar said that he was looking for a land for constructing a hospital and had expressed the need for a proper site. The couple collected Rs 1.9 crore from him, duly promising to transfer their land to him. The couple handed over certain documents stated to be relating to the site. On getting the documents verifiied, Vijay Kumar came to know that he was taken for a ride.
The police find that similar complaint was filed by another person. In that case, the couple reportedly swindled about Rs 20 crore in the guise of selling a site belonging to Dr Poornesh, duly furnishing a general power of attorney authorizing them to sell this land. This general power of attorney was found to be fake.
The police are on the lookout for this couple. The husband-wife duo, which has filed for anticipatory bail through the city civil court on November 3, have claimed themselves to be innocent.
The court which heard the bail petition, has refused to grant bail.
