Mangaluru: Fish import ban - Karnataka delegation succeeds in convincing Goa govt

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 28: A delegation representing fishermen from Karnataka visited Goa and held talks with ministers and officials there on Tuesday November 27. Sources in the delegation said that their talks were fruitful and they were able to convince Goa, which had blocked import of fish from Karnataka on the allegation of use of chemical preservative, to lift the ban.

The delegation held discussions with Goa speaker, Pramod Sawant, health minister, Vishwajit P Rane, fisheries minister, Vinod Paliencar, chief secretary and secretary.

Goan government however has placed conditions like vehicles bringing in fish should be insulated ones and they should possess certificate from FSSAI. The Goan government has also instructed its departments to release fishing trucks which were withheld in the state.

Fish vendors from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts have been permitted to sell fish in Goa.

The delegation, led by MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel and leader of the opposition in the legislative council, Kota Srinivas Poojary, had MLAs, Raghupati Bhat, D Vedavyas Kamath, and Dr Bharat Shetty, apart from Dinakar Shetty, fisheries leader, Ropali Naik, Trawl Boat Association president, Nitin Kumar, Fishermen's Federation president, Yashpal Suvarna, Purse Seine Fishermen's Association president, Mohan Bengre, Manohar Boloor, and several others as members.

Yashpal Suvarna said that the Goa government, which understood the ground reality, promised to sort out the issue within two days and pave way for free sale of fish. It also agreed to sort out its differences with Karwar region within a week, he added.

If the earlier condition was that fish had to be FSSAI certified before entering Goa, and the stand of the Goa Government hasn't changed at all, how exactly has the delegation "convinced" them??? This is actually a victory for the Goa Government's stand. Maybe our politicians think we are all fools here

What have they achieved? Even earlier, the Goa governmen't condition was that they'll allow shipments if they are FSSAI certified. They have reiterated the same here. How did they "succeed"? What a waste of taxpayer's money. This is called "manga malpunu".

This is like match fixing before the game is started. Again only 5 companies are allowed from Karnataka to sell fish to Goa. This shows, again preference given to few companies and mafia type controlled business.

Hope locals in Mangalore will be able to buy fish at very reasonable rate.

All these are election gimmicks. Fire MP knows that his popularity has gone down and is trying to get some free publicity.
All these conditions were imposed by Goa government even before Nalini and gang went there. Now these guys are claiming that they have changed Goa. Government’s mind.

    Misleading information.

From the very beginning of the ban, the Government of Goa has put certain conditions on any fish coming from other states.

The main condition: the fish delivered must be certified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that the fish contains no chemical preservatives.

Has the condition been removed for the Karnataka delegation that "succeeds in convincing Goa Government"?

No. Nothing has been changed! Back to the drawing broard for the ideas men and women.

I ASKED ONE OF MY FRIEND ABOUT FORMALIN WHICH IS USED TO STORE FISH FOR A LONG PERIOD
HE SAID, THEY USE FORMALIN FOR EXPENSIVE AND BIG FISHES
THESE EXPENSIVE FISHES ARE BEING SERVED IN 5 STAR/3 STAR/RESORTS. AND ONLY RICH PEOPLE GO THERE.
THEREFORE NOTHING TO WORRY, WE ARE ALL POOR PEOPLE AND WE CONSUME ONLY SMALL FISHES
IF AT ALL ANY SICKNESS COMES BY CONSUMING BIG FISHES, RICH PEOPLE HAVE MONEY TO TREAT, NO WORRIES....
    HAVE A NICE DAY!!!

You are wrong. It was also used on relatively small fishes which are not consumed by Indians, like Ribbonfish, Leather Jacket etc . Indian marine exports are huge compared to local fish consumption. Formalin was found on fishes in Consignments that went abroad . now those countries do not want Indian origin fish products.

Have these Jokers done something to catch and punish the idiots who were involved in formaldehyde treatment of fishes?

Do these people including the MLA fellow who calls himself a doctor realise the damage that formaledehyde does to a human body, worse still the kind of irrepairable damage actions of a few has caused to India's fish export markets? If they don't understand all this so called convincing is just hogwash and pure politics!!!
