Belagavi, Nov 23: Minister D K Shivakumar, on Friday, November 23, met sugarcane growers who were protesting in front of Suvarna Soudha and deputy commissioner’s office here against state government. Shivakumar told them that he is responsible to fulfill the demands of the aggrieved farmers.
The farmers, who were content with the negotiation by D K Shivakumar, withdrew their protests immediately. The sugarcane growers had not budged earlier during the meeting chaired by chief minister Kumaraswamy.
D K Shivakumar went to the venue of protests and sat with them. He gave details of work being done by the government to solve problems of the growers and the progress with respect to loan waiver. He later called them to circuit house and conducted discussions there.
Most of the sugar factories in Belagavi are owned by Jarkiholi brothers. They are also political rivals of D K Shivakumar. In the circumstances, it needs to be seen if D K Shivakumar’s stand against sugarcane factory owners and in favour of sugarcane growers will result in political friction between them.
