Church warns Kerala priest who organised protests against rape-accused bishop

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 22 (DC): A priest in Kerala who organised state-wide protests after the alleged rape of a nun by a Catholic priest was given a warning by the church.

'Save Our Sister', an organisation of various protesting groups, had organised a protest outside the Secretariat building. Fr Augustine Vattoly is the convenor of the organisation.

"I am told that such actions by a priest will seriously injure the good of the Church in public and will cause scandal among the faithful. Therefore, I strongly prohibit you from organizing and attending the said Dharna and similar activities. Disobedience will incur ecclesiastical actions as per norms of Church law," a letter from Major Archepady of Ernakulam-Angamaly said.

Fr Augustine Vattoly

The letter was sent to the priest on November 11, three days before the protest outside the state secretariat.

Kerala witnessed massive protests in September demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal.

Franco Mulakkal was accused of repeatedly raping a nun between 2013 and 2016. He was arrested in September and released three weeks later on conditional bail from a prison in Kerala

In June, a nun in her complaint alleged that she was raped by Franco Mulakkal 13 times, during his visits to Kottayam. However, the bishop has denied the charges.

In my point of view, the reprimand by the church brings.down it's reputation.

When there were hundreds of sex abuses all over the world by church clergy, they did transfer them to other churches instead of disciplinary action .

How can an alleged rape bring down reputation of the church?
Even if it is proven, then the bishop is guilty. Not the church.

strict action as per law is to be taken against the priest. If he wants to become leader let him leave the priesthood and organise movement. It is necessary for protection of other nuns and celibecy of other priests and nuns. The bishop and nun should have been expelled till they are exonerated from charges . some truth must be there in this whole episode.

People who support a rapist are also equally part of this crime! No matter whether he is a common man, Priest or Bishop! There cannot be smoke without fire! Hope the victim will get the justice she deserves and the person involved in this crime misusing his power will be punished as per the Law of the Land!

Who is this "Major" who sent the warning to the Kerala priest? If he is not an official of the Kerala church, and an ecclesiastic, how can he warn that severe action will be taken under the ecclesiastical law? It just flabbergasts me! Has the priest violated any law of the country?
