Kundapur, Nov 22: “1.40 lac people in the state are benefiting due to Indira Canteens. Udupi district has received four such canteens,” said district in-charge minster Dr Jayamala.
She was speaking after inaugurating Indira canteen at Shastri Circle here on Wednesday, November 27. “The success of Indira Canteen has made us think of mobile canteens especially for visitors of patients. The food is cheap here and it helps in generation of jobs,” she added.
“Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi too was concerned about poor and labour class people and started several projects for them,” she informed,
MLC r Pratapchandra Shetty, DC Priyanka Mary Francis, T Bhoobalan, Kiran Padnekar, municipal council members, taluk panchayat members and elected representatives were present.
“The deputy commissioner is likely to start ‘Ganji Oota’ on the basis of opinions of people,” Dr Jayamala said.
The inauguration of the canteen was delayed due to election code of conduct for many months. People were unhappy about the delay.
Arrangements have been made to provide food to three hundred people in a day. Further changes will be made on the basis of demand. The building and machinery are being used like in Amma Canteens in Tamil Nadu. The building and cooking tools have cost nearly Rs 72 lacs.
