Mangaluru, Nov 17: A protest is going in NITK Suratkal Campus after the suicide of Anand Pathak, third year mechanical engineering student on Saturday, November 17.

As per some sources, the student council has officially supported the protest. The students, who gathered in large numbers at the campus, raised slogans against the professor who allegedly had humiliated Anand.

The students have demanded the temporary suspension of Prof Herbert from the mechanical department until the committee that has been set up to enquire about this issue, comes to a conclusion.

The toxic culture that is followed in the education department from years that a professor needs to be extreme on the students to prepare them for the world needs to stop. It may work for some people with self-realization who take it lightly, but everybody is not the same. Some people are sensitive & there is a need to recognize each personality & treat them in a customized manner, at least while talking about serious matters. You can't just treat everyone equally over issues like this & expect them to take it in the same manner, especially the negative emotions. Some people, especially adolescents are really burdened with what is expected of them, & threatening their very goal to achieve it is a lack of understanding on the professor's part. The way the professor expressed about his attendance shortage & ban on attending for exam must've really made him think about the expensive fees & shame in front of his family. You can't make a person look like a failure just because of some engineering & attendance problems, especially when you know that he has many other recognized talents there's more to life than that. Some people take up a course just to end up being something else later on in life, it's just the path you take unless you hear your true calling. It never means that if you did a course, you have to end up pursuing that, without considering other options. Professors should really understand this message & that nothing is worth sacrificing your whole life over. There is a mistake from the student for not being able to take the right step as well, but the real problem with India, especially Mangalore is that there are a lot of unqualified professors teaching in colleges who aren't really well trained & are just some random undergrad or grad students turned professor. Some of them can't even construct a proper sentence while teaching & end up wasting their time as well as the students, all the while making them lazy, unfocused, & not being able to understand the subject, & then there are others who are really there only to feel the joy from controlling others, i.e, the extreme control freaks who channel their own wishes on every student they can get their hands on, instead of recognizing what their interest is. Stop making it a battle of students vs teachers, there needs to be mutual understanding & a proper way to initiate & keep up that understanding. Institutions should search for other jobs if all they care about now is money & power when the very profession demands qualities of care & upbringing a developing child as well.
