Mangalore, Nov 19: The Mangalore University organized a programme to felicitate Poovamma and Dinesh Kunder at the New Senate Hall of the University in Konaje near here, on Tuesday November 18.
Speaking on the occasion after receiving the honour, Poovamma's coach Dinesh Kunder said that the honour being conferred on himself and Poovamma has added to their responsibilities towards ensuring that Poovamma gives her best performance in the coming days.
The city badly needs an international standard synthetic track. The University should take the lead in laying this track for the benefit of athletes, he suggested.
He recollected their tough training regimen before the Olympics. He also thanked various organizations for honouring Poovamma for her achievements. But, other national and international athletes hailing from the district too should be encouraged by recognizing their talent and contributions, he requested.
Dayanand Pai, industrialist, handed over a cash reward of Rs 25,000 and announced payment of Rs 3,000 per month to her as fellowship. He also gave a cash reward of Rs. 10,000 to Dinesh Kunder.
Prof K M Kaveriappa, vice-chancellor, Mangalore University presided over the function. P Prem Kumar, registrar and others were present at the dais.
